Had a very pleasant Saturday evening dinner at Le Bistrot at Stadium Walk near the Kallang Indoor Stadium. 

Got there about 7pm which is early-ish for a Saturday dinner. This is great coz you guys know that I’m not a big fan of crowds. It was raining outside so it was a particulary cool and laid back kind of evening. The first thing that struck me is that the service was impeccable. We were welcomed by the door and though we had made a reservation, we were given a choice of where to sit. That was a pleasant welcome. 

The decor was nice. It wasn’t fancy shmancy but everything just worked really nicely together. I should have taken more pictures of the interior. The collection of chairs they used were eclectic but yet worked together. The lighting was muted but not dark and not too bright, a large chalk wall on one side, dark ceiling, wooden panels with perfect circles cut out (I asked one of the owners Thaddeus about this – it was a design element) and a nice column kind of structure in the middle. It’s hard to make eclectic work. But they pulled it off marvelously. 


We both chose the 2 course set (Entree and Main Course) @ S$50 per person. This was dinner:


Salade de Crabe et Avocat

You have to add S$4 for this option but it was fabulous. Really well done. This is essentially, blue swimmer crab and red onion salad with avocado mousse, candied walnuts and chilled gazpacho. The guy serving us told us we can either have the gazpacho with the salad or have it separately. I chose separately. The combination of the blue swimmer crab and red onion salad with avocado mousse was brilliant. Really good. I really ate this slowly to savour it. Yum. 

The other entree we had was not on the menu but was one of the specials.

Seared Tuna with Baby Spinach

Also very good. I asked and the guy said that this tuna is sashimi grade tuna from Japan. It was good. Although I must say it was not as “interesting” as the other appetizer. I guess what I’m saying is that while this was really good, it wasn’t something that is hard to make or something I’d seen before compared to the Salade de Crabe et Avocat. Really not knocking it though. It was good. 

Again, we chose a special which was not on the menu. This is the tuna steak.

Yeah, I know it’s a lot of tuna but I like tuna. And you can tune a piano but you can’t tuna fish. Again, fabulously done. For me, I know the food is good when I savour and eat slowly. The piece wasn’t huge so I let it linger. Unlike some fish dishes, this is ok to be eaten at room temperature; it doesn’t have to be piping hot.  This was served with grilled vegetables and I have to make special mention of the eggplant which came with it.  I don’t know what type of eggplant it was (I should have asked), but it was exceptional. 

The final main course which was from their regular menu was the rump steak.

Heh. Sorry more pomme frites here than steak but the fries were really good too. Again, should have asked what they used by way of potato. Ah well. They only serve this steak rare or medium rare. Well done is not an option. It was good. Well worth it. Again, not a fancy preperation but for this, it was ok. Some things should be left simple. If you have a good piece of meat, don’t complicate it, I say. So yep, good one. 

Initially, when we reviewed the menu online, we thought nah, nothing much there. Take a look at their menu.  Not a fan of duck confit, nor kurobata pork, etc. etc. But we decided to go anyway and that was a good call. Glad we went. 

Also, bumped into a friend whom I had not seen for a long time. She was there celebrating her birthday with another friend. Here she is caught by surprise. Will be catching up with her week after next. 

With dinner we ordered a carafe of white wine which went nicely with the meal (don’t ask me for more description – I’m not a wine connoisseur). The total bill was just under S$160 all in. For the ambiance and the food, good value.
